學術寫作必備的五種「解釋論點」片語

在嘗試用英語寫作時，最常遇到的瓶頸就是：字數不夠，或不知道該怎麼明確表達自己的意思。這是很正常的，畢竟英文不是母語，除非大量接觸英文，否則很難建立「英文腦」——也就是用英文思考而非用母語思考。為了解決這兩個問題，這裡分享五種為論點多作解釋的方式。

重點整理｜解釋論點的三個重點

1. 用 in other words 換句話說
2. 用 that is to say 進一步說明
3. 一句說不完，就拆成兩句解釋

例如你想表達：「父母不見得是最好的老師，因為有些父母會有不良行為，例如抽菸、喝酒，而這樣的行為會讓孩子透過模仿而學習。」

Parents aren't necessarily the best teachers since they might have some bad behaviours, such as smoking and drinking, which might be learnt by children through imitation.

如果沒辦法用一句話表達完整意思，該怎麼表達才能保有「學術感」呢？

1. In order to（為了）

"In order to understand why second language learners tend to be more anxious facing a native speaker, we need to first understand their fundamental sources of anxiety."（為了瞭解為什麼外語學習者面對母語人士較容易感到焦慮，我們必須先了解他們根本的焦慮來源。）

2. In other words（換言之）

"Frogs are amphibians. In other words, they live on the land and in the water."（青蛙是兩棲類動物。換言之，牠們住在陸地上也住在水裡。）

3. To put it another way（換言之）

"Plants rely on photosynthesis. To put it another way, they will die without the sun."（植物依賴光合作用。換言之，它們在沒有陽光的狀況下會死。）

4. That is (to say)（也就是說）

"Whales are mammals. That is to say, they must breathe air."（鯨魚也是哺乳類動物。也就是說，牠們必須呼吸空氣。）

5. To that end（因此）

"Zoologists have long sought to understand how animals communicate with each other. To that end, a new study has been launched that looks at elephant sounds and their possible meanings."（動物學家一直想要找到動物之間交流的方式。因此，他們執行了一個關於大象發出的聲音以及其意義的新研究。）
